I grew up in western Pennsylvania in a Pittsburgh suburb. My family owned 55 acres of wooded property near my home, and there were many, many fun-filled summer days and weekends spent out at ”The Woods”. We’d play in the creek, catch crayfish and salamanders, have cookouts and parties, and stuff ourselves full of hotdogs and marshmallows.
Every Spring, the trillium would bloom. The vast majority of the trillium in The Woods was white trillium. The only place the red trillium grew was in one small ravine that had a waterfall and stream trickling through. Red trillium flowers, unlike their showy white sisters, turn toward the ground. From the top of the ravine, all that could be seen was a carpet of green. From the bottom, though, we could look up the hills on either side of the waterfall and see the hidden red flowers.
Red Trillium, this picture, was one third of a triptych for my mom. The triptych, called Papa’s Woods, commemorated my family’s property, which has since been donated to a non-profit organization that maintains it as a public green space and preserve. Papa’s Woods was my first ”official” quilt.
